AMIDRIEL

Film photographer based in Vienna

How it all began:

Photography has always been a huge part of my life. It began in childhood - lot's of volumes of family photo albums on the bookshelves, folders and envelopes with very old pictures that my late grandfather had maually developed himself (he was a great photographer by the way).

I still remember my first film camera - it was a small "UFO" point-and-shoot camera that I used to take with me everywhere when I was 13-14 years old.

Although only a few film rolls from those times survived, I still had so much fun with it.

I always had this intense desire to document and capture the ephemeral beauty of life and the little mundane things around me. I don't remember when or how it started, it was just always there.

And so, around teenage years I started to take pictures, a lot of them,

It became somewhat of a process of creating a visual diary, a personal way of communicationg with the outside world.
And when I started to take interest in self-portraiture it also became a way of a self discovery.

I started more consciously taking pictures and eventually working as a portraiture film photographer in 2018.

I am a completely self-taught photographer.

Why do I use film as a medium?

Because to me it feels more alive than digital, it captures and shows the atmosphere and mood and feelings so delicately, yet very real.

(yes-yes, I know, you've probably heard that one a million times, since film photography has become extremely popular lately, but it is true)

I also absolutely love the physical aspect of analog photography:

the way the mechanical camera works, how you set it up, then how you shoot and then after you are done with the filmrolls, you wait for them to be processed and scanned - it is extremely exciting and yes, romantic.

What does "Amidriel" mean?

Amidriel (or Ami for friends) is both my nickname and my artist name.

Around 8 years ago I came up with it while playing my favourite MMORPG game, and it kind of stayed with me ever since,
So, yeah, I am Ami, nice to meet you.
